Effect of endodontic access simulation on the fracture strength of lithium-disilicate and resin-matrix ceramic CAD-CAM crowns. Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effect of simulated endodontic access preparation on the failure loads of lithium disilicate crowns and resin-matrix ceramic RMC crowns.

Materials and methods: Eighty Half of each group was accessed and repaired to simulate endodontic treatment. After cyclic loading, all specimens were loaded to failure.

Even though significant differences were noted for failure loads regarding different crown materials, all could reasonably withstand masticatory forces.

Clinical Significance: The endodontic access preparation through a restoration is known to be a common challenge in clinical practice.

Evaluation of polymerization shrinkage of bulk-fill resin composites using microcomputed tomography. Objectives This study evaluated the influence of cavity depth on polymerization shrinkage of bulk-fill resin composites with and without adhesive resin.

Materials and methods Standardized box-shaped cavities width, 4 mm; length, 5 mm, All the bulk-fill resin composites tested showed significantly less shrinkage when applied in cavities with adhesive resin 0.

At a 2-mm cavity depth without 2 mm, 2. At a 4-mm cavity depth without 3. Conclusions The bulk-fill composites tested presented less shrinkage when used in conjunction with adhesive resin application on dentin.

Overall, the low-viscosity bulk-fill resin SDR showed more shrinkage compared with high-viscosity resins tested. Clinical relevance Low-or high-viscosity bulk-fill resin composites should be applied on dentin after application of adhesive resin to decrease shrinkage.

In recent years, Zirconia-reinforced Lithium Silicate ceramic ZLS , combining lithium-silicate and zirconia features, has shown to have excellent mechanical and aesthetic characteristics.

Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the fracture strength of ZLS single crowns cemented with two different cementation techniques.

Twenty crowns were realised and cemented on teeth replicas achieved from an extracted premolar human tooth.

The mechanical test was performed using a universal testing machine. The specimens were then evaluated with a scanning electron microscope SEM to identify for all crowns and related abutments the pattern of fracture after the breaking point.

The data obtained were statistically analysed. Within the limitations of this study, these results suggest the use of adhesive cementation for ZLS crowns, which significantly increase the compressive strength of ZLS restorations compared to GIC.

Evaluation of magnetic resonance imaging issues of titanium and stainless steel brackets. Magnetic resonance imaging MRI is a sophisticated diagnostic method of contemporary medicine.

This examination in patients with metallic objects is often complicated due to MRI issues. Clinically significant difference in MRI issues of Clinically significant difference in MRI issues of titanium equilibrium ti, Dentaurum and stainless steel Gemini, 3M Unitec brackets was studied in a clinical 1.

In this in vitro study, the following parameters were assessed: artefacts, magnetic field interaction, and heating. Translational attraction, torque and heating were tested.

The titanium bracket for upper lateral incisor produced 2. The stainless steel bracket for upper lateral incisor caused more than 50 mm distortions in the same sequences.

Images of the titanium bracket set were diagnostically acceptable whereas the stainless steel bracket set could not be graded due to the incapability of the MRI scanner to adjust resonance frequency.

No clinically relevant translational attraction and no torque were detected for equilibrium ti brackets, while Gemini brackets were strongly attracted by the magnetic field.

No clinically significant heating was observed. Noticeable difference in MRI issues of the brackets was observed in artefacts and mobility.

Gemini brackets were found unacceptable for MRI. Effect of ceramic material type on the fracture load of inlay-retained and full-coverage fixed dental prostheses.

Calcium silicate cement interface with restorative materials through layering after different time intervals.

The aim was to evaluate the interfacial characteristics of Biodentine, CEM Cement, and ProRoot MTA when restored with different final restorative materials after different time intervals.

Layering was done either immediately, 24 or 72 h after cement placement. The interface of cements with restorative materials was characterized using scanning electron micros-copy SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy EDS after separation.

Vickers surface microhardness test was also performed on the interface. In ProRoot MTA no significant difference was seen in the microhardness when layered with different restorative materials regardless of the time of layering.

In immediate layering, Biodentine exhibited the highest microhardness values. Both immediate and delayed layering resulted in element transfer between calcium silicate cements CSCs and restorative materials.

Deposition and depletion of element occurs subsequent to layering of restorative materials on CSCs. When immediate layering is necessary, Biodentine may be a better option compared to other CSCs evaluated.

Additive manufacturing technologies for processing zirconia in dental applications: A literature review on current status and future perspectives.

Objective: The objective of this narrative review was to summarize the current status and future perspectives of additive manufacturing AM technologies with a particular emphasis on manufacturing zirconia-based materials.

AM technologies include vat photopolymerization, material jetting, material extrusion, selective laser sintering SLS , and selective laser melting SLM technologies based on either powder bed fusion PBF technologies or direct energy deposition, or sheet lamination based on binder jetting technologies.

Materials and methods: A comprehensive literature review was performed, specifically evaluating AM technologies assigned for processing zirconia.

An electronic database search was performed using keywords and MeSH terms. The search was confined to full-text articles written in English and published in peer-reviewed journals between and Results: A total of 62 articles were included in this review, of which 56 described the AM processes and 6 reported on AM applications in the field of dentistry.

A broad diversity of literature exists regarding AM technologies for ceramic materials, which complicates the establishment of a classification system for the current AM technologies for zirconia.

The variations in the composition of zirconia slurries or mixtures across different technologies often made it difficult to identify the proper nature of such information.

Mechanical properties of printed zirconia materials utilizing different technologies were investigated through a wide range of tests.

Overall, the review indicates that manufacturing zirconia using AM technologies could be achieved without issues, but mechanical properties appear to be poor compared with conventional manufacturing procedures.

Conclusions: The results of this review indicate the necessity for further potential improvement in AM technologies for manufacturing zirconia reconstructions along with advances in material composition before zirconia could be considered as a material for standard care.

Surface roughness and wear behavior of occlusal splint materials made of contemporary and high-performance polymers. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the surface roughness The wear volume loss and change in Ra of each specimen after the simulated chewing were analyzed.

The result showed that the volume loss and Ra varied among the materials tested. Purpose: The present study evaluated the displacement and strain generated in an implant supported fixed prosthesis under axial and non-axial loads using two methods.

Materials and Methods: Three implants were inserted in a resin block Materials and Methods: Three implants were inserted in a resin block.

A 3-dimensional model was constructed and a load of N was applied at an axial point and a non-axial point through finite element analysis FEA.

Results: Both methods gave similar trends for the strains, and both gave slightly higher strains with non-axial loading. Higher strain was generated for non-axial loading around the implant nearest to the loading.

Conclusions: For implant-retained cantilever fixed prosthesis, the same load applied in the lever arm induces higher strain in the cervical area of the last implant, which suggests more damaging potential than a load applied at the center of the prosthesis.

This case-controlled clinical trial was performed on the salivary 8-hydroxyguanosine 8-OHdG levels in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis after non-surgical periodontal therapy.

At baseline, clinical periodontal parameters plaque index, gingival index, pocket probing depth and clinical attachment levels were evaluated.

Saliva samples were obtained pre-and post-treatment to quantify the 8-OHdG levels using Elisa technique. Subjects diagnosed with chronic periodontitis with smoking habit CPs and non-smokers CPns received scaling and root planing.

In clinically healthy subjects with smoking habit CHs and non-smokers CHns , only oral hygiene tutoring was performed.

All clinical measurements and salivary collection were repeated in a 3-month recall interval. All clinical parameters in chronic periodon-titis group improved at the 3rd month recall interval, however, with regards to 8-OHdG values, the CP smoker category still had a higher level compared to CP non-smoker.

This study reflects an ongoing periodontal destructive status in smokers and salivary 8-OHdG levels could be recognized as an oxidative biomarker for determining periodontal tissue destruction.

Materials and Methods. A scanning electron microscope was used to evaluate the surface properties.

For both Empress and e. No significant differences in microhardness were observed. According to our study, patients should be careful when using home bleaching agents because whitening agents can affect the mechanical properties of full ceramic restorations like e.

Ceramic polishing may be required in clinical situations where ceramic restorations are accidentally exposed to bleaching gels.

Adhesion to high-performance polymers appliedin dentistry: A systematic review. Additive manufacturing of dental polymers: An overview on processes, materials and applications.

Material and Methods: One complete dentate patient was selected. A complete maxillary arch vinyl polysiloxane impression was obtained and poured using Type IV dental stone.

The working cast was digitized using a laboratory scanner E4 Dental Scanner; 3Shape and the reference standard tessellation language STL file was obtained.

Two groups were created based on the extension of the maxillary digital scans performed namely complete-arch CA group and right quadrant RQ groups.

The STL R file was used to analyze the discrepancy between the digitized working cast and digital scans using MeshLab software. Results: Significant difference in the trueness and precision values were found across different lighting conditions where RL condition obtained the lowest absolute error compared with the other lighting conditions tested followed by CL, NL, and ZL.

On the RQ group, CL condition presented the lowest absolute error when compared with the other lighting conditions evaluated.

A pair-wise multicomparison showed no significant difference between NL and ZL conditions. In all groups, the standard deviation was higher than the mean errors from the control mesh, indicating that the relative precision was low.

Conclusions: Light conditions significantly influenced on the scanning accuracy of the IOS evaluated.

RL condition obtained the lowest absolute error value of the digital scans performed. The extension of the digital scan was a scanning accuracy influencing factor.

The higher the extension of the digital scan performed, the lower the accuracy values obtained. Furthermore, ambient light scanning conditions influenced differently depending on the extension of the digital scans made.

Intraoral scanner IOS devices provide a clinically acceptable alternative to conventional impression making for tooth and implant-supported crowns and short-span fixed dental prostheses.

Results: A total of 13 articles 12 for ceramic, one for indirect composite met the inclusion criteria.

No articles were included regarding crystalline ceramic. Conclusions: Regardless of the manufacturing method, vitreous ceramic inlays, onlays, and overlays showed high survival, providing evidence that these restorations are a safe treatment.

Clinical relevance: Vitreous ceramic inlays, onlays, and overlays showed high survival, regardless of the manufacturing method, providing evidence that these restorations are a safe treatment.

Influence of scan body design and digital implant analogs on implant replica position in additively manufactured casts. A definitive implant cast should accurately represent the 3D implant position of the patient's mouth in relation to the surrounding intraoral tissues.

Additive manufacturing AM technologies can be used to fabricate definitive casts for implant-supported restorations.

However, information regarding the accuracy of the implant replica position on the polymeric AM cast generated with different scan bodies and digital implant replica systems is lacking.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare with a conventional stone cast the linear and angular discrepancies of the implant analog positions in a polymeric AM cast obtained from 3 different scan body and digital implant replica systems.

A partially edentulous maxillary typodont with 3 implant replicas Implant replica RP Branemark system; Nobel Biocare was prepared.

For the Elos Medtech subgroup, the corresponding scan bodies were placed on each implant, and the typodont was digitized by using a laboratory scanner E3 scanner; 3Shape.

The same procedure was repeated with the remaining subgroups. The Shapiro-Wilk test revealed that the data were not normally distributed.

The CNV group presented significantly higher linear discrepancy than the Dynamic Abutment group on the x-and y-axes.

The Dynamic Abutment group had significantly better accuracy for the mesiodistal and buccolingual implant replica positions than the CNV group, but the conventional procedures had significantly better results for the apicocoronal implant replica position.

Scan body and digital implant replica design systems only influenced the accuracy of the angular implant replica position on the AM casts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of two ceramic systems fabricated Materials and methods: Forty intact human maxillary premolars were divided into two main groups according to the preparation technique.

Group H Horizontal : teeth with shoulder finish line and group V Vertical : teeth with feather edge. Each main group was subdivided randomly into two subgroups according to the material used.

Evaluation of Chemical and Physical Properties. Composite samples were divided as follows: in Group I immediate , samples were polished immediately after curing t 0 ; in Group D delayed , samples were polished after 24 h from curing t 24 , whereas the unpolished samples were considered as controls Group C.

Qualitative evaluations of scanning electron micrographs showed that the surface morphology of MET presented a more irregular aspect than the DMET one.

In summary, since the immediate polishing of MET can improve the DC, without negatively affecting VMH, but showing an irregular surface, it is suggested to wait 24 hours before proceeding with polishing.

Bonding to industrial indirect composite blocks: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Available online xxx Keywords: Bonding Composite resin Indirect composite block a b s t r a c t Objective.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning methods on the bond strength The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning methods on the bond strength of industrial indirect composite blocks ICs.

In vitro studies evaluating the effects of surface conditioning on the bond strength of ICs were selected. The meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the mean difference between surface-conditioned ICs and unconditioned controls.

Subgroup analysis was performed to evaluate the different surface conditioning methods, separately for polymer-infiltrated ceramic network PICN material and the ICs with dispersed fillers ICDFs.

Meta-analyses were performed with a random-effects model at a significance level of 0. Results and Significance.

From relevant studies, 25 were selected for full-text analysis. Nineteen studies were eligible for inclusion in this systematic review, whereas 9 studies were included in the meta-analysis.

A manual search of the principal periodicals specific to the area resulted in no additional articles. The meta-analysis indicated a significant difference in bond strength between the surface-conditioned ICs and controls under both non-aged and aged conditions.

The combination of mechanical and chemical conditioning yielded the highest bond strength of ICs.

This meta-analysis suggests that chemical etching followed by a universal primer and alumina air abrasion followed by a silane coupling agent could be considered the best strategy for optimizing the bond strength of PICN materials and ICDFs under aged conditions, respectively.

The substrate was roughened with grit sandpaper, simulating a fine-grit diamond bur. Shear bond strength and ARI were assessed.

Shear bond strengths and ARI scores were compared with those of groups 3, 6. Roughening with a coarser bur resulted in a significant increase in adhesion.

Effect of self-etching ceramic primer on bond strength of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics. Two hundred and seventy block-specimens of two types of ZLS ceramics and one type of lithium disilicate LS ceramics were prepared.

Resin cement was applied, and light-cured for build-up. Shear bond strength SBS test was used. The failure modes were evaluated using scanning electron microscope SEM.

Mixed failure followed by adhesive failure were the most common failure modes in groups 2 and 3, whereas pre-test failure was only detected in group 1.

Considering the limitations of the study, with respect to in vitro bond strength, the SECP is an alternative for the conditioning of internal surface of glass ceramics.

Effect of pH variation on the subcritical crack growth parameters of glassy matrix ceramics. The goals of our study were to calculate the subcritical crack growth SCG parameters of two veneering ceramics stored in water or Streptococcus mutans S.

Feldspar VM Some specimens were indented with a Vickers diamond and the crack dimensions were measured. The specimens were fractured for a calculation of inert strength or further stored in water or submitted to pH variation, under preloading tension.

Weibull analysis was conducted on non-indented specimens. XPS was performed as qualitative analysis.

The subcritical crack of leucite ceramic did not vary with the media storage, but the glass-ceramic experienced a retarded growth after pH variation.

The materials presented low Weibull modulus. Qualitative elemental analyses showed chemical modification on both ceramics.

Therefore, the crack growth of leucite-reinforced ceramic was less affected by the environment pH than glass-ceramic.
